National Overseas Scholarship/Passage Grant for SC, NT etc. students foreign scholarship

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment invites application for 100  Overseas Scholarships and 5 passage grants from eligible students belonging to Schedule caste(SC), Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribe and Landless Agricultural Labourers and Traditional Artisans for the year 2016-17. The scholarship will cover the cost of fees, and other educational expenses including, maintenance, contingency allowance, and travel expenses etc.

Specified field-wise distribution of scholarship will be as follows:

30% of the scholarships shall be reserved for girl candidate.

For Passage grant, only those candidates are eligible who possess a Master or equivalent degree in any of the above-mentioned stream and are in receipt of merit scholarship for Post Graduate studies, Research or Training abroad.
Duration of award of scholarship: Financial assistance in the form of scholarship is provided till the completion of course/research or the following period, whichever is earlier:-
(a) Ph.D. -- 04 years (Four years)
(b) Master’s Degree -- 03 years (Three years)


1. You must have at least 55% marks in your Bachelors'/Masters' degree.
2. Candidates age should be below 35 years, as on 1st Apri 2016
3. Total income from all sources of the employed candidate or his/her parents/guardians shall not exceed Rs.6,00,000 per annum.
4. Not more than two children of the same parents/guardians will be eligible and to this effect a self-certification will be required from the candidate.

31st March 2017 is the last date of applying for National Overseas Scholarship for SC, NT etc.


Scholarship Amount Details

Quantum of annual financial assistance offered under Overseas Scholarship/Passage Grant for SC, NT etc. students are as follows:

A.Quantum of annual maintenance allowance 
(i)For USA and other countries except UK annual maintenance allowance of US Dollar 15400/- (Approximately 10,50,000 INR)
(ii)For UK annual maintenance allowance of 9900/- GBP (Approximately 8,58,000/- INR)

B.Quantum of Annual Contingency Allowance
(i)For USA and other countries except UK the prescribed contingency allowance for books/essential apparatus/study tour/travel cost for attending subject related conferences, workshops etc./ typing and binding of thesis etc. is US Dollars 1500/-
(ii)For UK Annual Contingency Allowance for books/essential apparatus /study tour/travel cost for attending subject related conferences, workshops etc./ typing and binding of thesis etc. is Great Britain Pound (GBP) 1100/-

C.Incidental journey allowance & equipment allowance
The prescribed Incidental journey allowance is US $20/-  or its equivalent in Indian Rupees and the prescribed equipment allowance is US$ 20/-

D.Poll Tax
Actual will be paid, wherever applicable.

E.Visa Fees
Actual visa fees in Indian Rupees will be paid.

F.Tuition Fees
Actual as charged

G.Medical Insurance Premium
Actual as charged

H.Air Passage
Economy Class return airfare from India to the nearest place to the educational institution and back to India.

J.Local Travel
Second or Coach Class railway fare from the port of disembarkation to the place of study and back. In case of far-flung places that are not connected by rail/bus, actual fare will be reimbursed for whatever mode of travel they choose.

Apart from the above-mentioned allowances, the scholars are also permitted to supplement their allowances by undertaking Research/Teaching Assistantship. The mode of disbursement of above allowances or grants will be jointly decided by Government of India and Indian Mission abroad. 


Mode of application online/offline:

  • Application form for National Overseas Scholarship/Passage Grant for SC, NT etc. can be downloaded by clicking on the apply link of the site.
  • Application form complete in all respect along with requisite documents should be sent the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment at the address mentioned in contact detail section.

Following documents must accompany the application form for scholarship:

  • SSC certificate or other certificate as a proof of date of birth
  • All Degrees/Diplomas/Certificate with mark sheets
  • Income certificate in the prescribed format signed by competent revenue officer, head of the department or employer in case the candidate is employed 
  • Offer letter if obtained admission
  • Self-attested photocopies of caste certificate issued by competent authority

In case of passage grants following  additional information should be furnished along with the application form:

  • Details of merit scholarship and the manner in which it has been obtained .
  • Self Attested copy of the letter of the award.
