Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and technology invites application from bonafide Indian nationals for pursuing research in frontier areas of Biotechnology through their prestigious "DBT-Junior Research Fellowship" programme. The programme is being co-ordinated by Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL), New Delhi. The candidates for the fellowship will be selected through an online "Biotechnology Eligibility Test". On the basis of performance in the test two categories of merit list will be prepared (Category I & Category II). Candidates selected under category I (Top 275) will be eligible to avail fellowship under the programme. These will be tenable in any University/Institute in India where the selected candidate is registered for PhD programme. Candidates selected under category II (next 100 in merit list) will be eligible to be appointed in any DBT sponsored project and avail fellowship from the project equivalent to NET/GATE, subject to selection through the institutional selection process.


1.Students with M.Sc. / M.Tech / M.V.Sc. degree with Biotechnology in title of degree e.g. Biotechnology, specialization such as Agricultural, Animal / Veterinary, Medical, Marine, Industrial, Environmental, Pharmaceutical, Food, Bio-resources   Biotechnology, “Biochemical Engineering, Bio-sciences and Biotechnology, Bioinformatics” and M.Sc. “Molecular & Human Genetics” and M.Sc. “Neuroscience” as well as B.Tech / B.E. in Biotechnology (4-year course after 10+2) recognized by  
UGC/AICTE  are eligible for BET examination.
2.The applicants should be below the age of 28 years for Open category at the time of applying.(Age relaxation of 5 years (up to 33 years) for SC /ST/PH and women candidates and 3 years (31 years) for OBC candidates will be given)
3.Candidates with minimum 60% for general and OBC category (55% for SC/ST/PH) of the total marks (equivalent grade) are only eligible.

Note: Candidates can appear for Biotechnology Eligibility Test BET examination only thrice during their career within the prescribed age limit. Candidates who have completed eligibility qualification in a year will be eligible to appear in that year and two subsequent years.

Scholarship Amount Details

The fellowship will be initially for a period of 3 years extendable for 2 more years based on performance. During the tenure of fellowship each JRF fellow is entitled to receive amount @ Rs. 25,000/- or 28,000/- per month + HRA as per DST guidelines and research contingency of Rs.30,000/- per year


Mode of application for DBT-Junior Research Fellowship in Bio-Technology-2017 : Online . The online application process consists of two steps:

Step1: Registering on the BCIL site: 

  • Before applying for the fellowship candidate need to register themselves on the official website of BCL. Registration is open from 4th January 2017 to 10th February 2017.
  • Click on the apply link of the site and you will be directed to the online registration form of DBT-Junior Research Fellowship in Bio-Technology-2017
  • The online registration form contains basic information such as Name of Candidate, Date of Birth, Email ID, Mobile No, declaration section and Captcha. Fill all the fields with utmost care as entries in registration form cannot be changed once submitted.
  • Within minutes of submitting registration form, you will receive a User ID and password on the registered email id from the Administrator. You will also receive the user ID and password on the registered mobile no. 

Step 2: Filling online application form:

  • Use this user ID and password to access the online application for the DBT fellowship.
  • The application form is divided into four sections: viz., Personal details, Qualification details, Document upload & Declaration section.
  • Fill up all the sections with utmost care and upload the requisite documents. 
  • Once documents are uploaded, click on save and continue to proceed to next section. i.e Payment & Declaration Section
  • Candidate can make payment through Net Banking or Debit/credit Card. The candidate will not be registered for test until the payment is made
  • After making requisite payment download the acknowledgement receipt as it can be used for any future communication (required)

Note: The application fee for BET 2017 is Rs. 1000/-(One thousand Only) for General and OBC candidates. However, SC/ST and PH candidates are exempted from payment of the application fee.

Documents to be uploaded while filling application form:

  • Recent passport size photograph (Maximum 80 Kb size, in JPG/JPEG format)
  • Recent scanned signature (Maximum 80 Kb size, in JPG/JPEG format)
  • Date of Birth Proof as per guidelines (Maximum 150 Kb size, in JPG/JPEG format). DOB proof can be SSC Certificate, PAN Card or Passport.
  • Qualifying Marks Certificate

Documents (if applicable):

  • Category/Caste Certificate (Maximum 150 Kb size, in JPG/JPEG format)
  • PH Certificate (Maximum 150 Kb size, in JPG/JPEG format).

Please note while uploading documents:

a)Documents should be in provided template. No other format will be acceptable
b)Documents are to be uploaded in mention size limits. The system will not accept document exceeding the desired size limit.
c)For reducing the size of the document make use of MS Paint.
